Background
We have been renting pitches at Whitchurch Playing fields, Wemborough Road, for more years than any of us can remember, but the Council-owned pavilion at Whitchurch has been unused, abandoned by the Council, and deteriorating for nearly 10 years. This is not a criticism of Harrow Council, which has been subject to financial constraints. However, our boys and girls have never had access to any facilities other than the actual pitches (which themselves are neglected). We have made bids to lease the pavilion to Harrow Council on two previous occasions (2004 and 2007), but have been rejected both times despite our bids being, we believe, very strong.
Our Bid to Harrow Council
We have now submitted a bid, jointly with Harrow Rugby Football Club, Headstone Manor Ladies Cricket Club, Parnell’s Gaelic Football Club and Granuaile Hurling Club for a long lease from the Council, for the whole playing field area. This would involve the demolition of the old pavilion (which is now beyond repair) and construction of a new changing pavilion that will be used both as a new home for the 5 partner Clubs involved in the project, and to provide a valuable community resource for residents of the Borough. It would be open 12 months a year (3 of our clubs are summer sports, and 2 are winter sports) and facilities would be available to local schools in mid week during term time.
The whole of Whitchurch playing fields would be used as a multi sport centre to serve the needs of our five different sports. We would jointly develop, manage, and operate it for the benefit of local people. Each of our clubs has a rich local history and legacy of providing opportunities to take part in sport and have long established community links with schools, the council, and National Governing Bodies of Sport, whether in England or Ireland. We know that this is our last chance of finding a permanent home at Whitchurch, and possibly of ever finding a home anywhere.
Funding the Bid
Harrow Council has told us that we have now been shortlisted, and we believe we have an excellent chance to succeed in our dream, as long as we, and our partners, can find the funds required to rebuild the pavilion and bring the grounds at Whitchurch up to standard.
Each club has committed to raising a significant amount of capital to fund the cost of providing what would be a huge community resource run at nil cost to the local Council Tax payer. St Joseph’s current target is to raise at least £50,000 towards the cost of the work needed. This will be an essential supplement to any funding agreed by funding bodies such as the Football Foundation or Lotteries Board, which look for us to match any grants Pound for Pound.
We have established a Whitchurch Fundraising Committee. The Committee has identified a range of ways to help reach our target. We are applying to the Charity Commission for charity status for our bid. There are many ways you can help us to achieve our target and with your support we can ensure a permanent home for our young stars for many years to come!
DO YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE IN FUNDRAISING?
If you have any experience in fundraising or expertise that may help in achieving our goals then we would love to hear from you. Please contact a member of committee, even if you do not wish to join the committee itself but could offer ideas and advice.
Remember that every penny raised goes directly towards our fundraising bid to provide permanent community based facilities for many years to come!
